Howling Commandos of SHIELD 001 (Oct. 2015)
SPOILERS AHEAD! YE BE WARNED!
“In order to defend the world from supernatural threats, S.H.I.E.L.D. has established the S.T.A.K.E. division. Housed in a bunker deep below AREA 13, S.T.A.K.E. uses extranormal operatives for secret missions dealing with creatures of the night and dark forces of the unknown. Dum Dum Dugan — recently revealed to be an advanced LMD — has been charged with leading S.T.A.K.E.’s field team, comprised of extranormalities who are currently under S.H.I.E.L.D. evaluation. Together, they are THE HOWLING COMMANDOS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.” –Howling Commandos of SHIELD 001 (Oct. 2015)
Their first mission is to rescue any remaining crew members of the S.S. Chaney. Most of the crew are turning into zombies that are plant based. Meet the team, you have Orrgo at S.T.A.K.E. HQ, Zombie Jasper Sitwell, Manphibian, Vampire By Night, Teen Abomination, Hit-Monkey, Man-Thing and Reyna Warwolf. A dangerous artifact made its way onto the ship, the Earth Idol of Golthana which is capable of transmuting living tissue into bio-organic plant mass. They are able to destroy the plant-zombies and the massive creature the idol spawned, but Dum Dum would not leave without Zombie Jasper. Zombie Jasper not being the brightest bulb in the batch fired a bazooka in Dum Dum’s face. Good thing he has other bodies to transfer his consciousness into. Maria Hill was not pleased at the mess they made and their path of destruction, but Dum Dum’s mission was a success. He was able to asses his team in the field to see who was worthy to be a member of the Howling Commandos. Before the comic is done, S.T.A.K.E. gets an alert about supernatural energy being detected in the New York area. We see a girl in a red hood on the subway explode and bring forth a bunch of Egyptian gods. Woah. TO BE CONTINUED…
A pretty funny take on the Howling Commandos. Nothing will ever beat the original and I think Mrs. Deadpool and the Howling Commandos was a bit more fun (especially with Deadpool as the narrator), but this one looks ok as well. They could have done a little better introducing the team members. I felt they sped right through it to focus on the battle. Maybe they will introduce them better in the next comic. Until then!
