Pokemon S1E2 – Pokémon Emergency!
“Pokémon Emergency!” does something important for the series that the first episode couldn’t quite do: it begins turning the world of Pokémon into an actual recurring world with characters, locations, and organizations that we will keep encountering throughout Ash’s journey.
The episode picks up immediately after the events of the first episode, with Ash rushing the badly injured Pikachu to a Pokémon Center. It is a nice continuation from the premiere rather than simply jumping ahead to a completely unrelated adventure. Pikachu’s condition also gives the episode some immediate stakes.
Along the way, we meet Officer Jenny, making her first appearance in the series. She initially suspects Ash of being a Pokémon thief, which is understandable given the circumstances surrounding his frantic arrival with Pikachu. Jenny would go on to become one of the show’s recurring characters, so it’s interesting seeing her introduced right at the beginning of the series.
We also get our first introduction to Nurse Joy, who runs the Pokémon Center. Like Officer Jenny, Nurse Joy will become a familiar face throughout the Pokémon world. The episode therefore starts establishing that these aren’t just random characters who exist for one episode. The Pokémon world has institutions and people that Ash will repeatedly encounter on his journey.
Misty is still following Ash, primarily because she wants compensation for the bicycle he stole from her in the previous episode. Considering that Ash managed to destroy the bicycle almost immediately after taking it, her anger is pretty understandable. Their relationship is still very much in its antagonistic phase, but the episode continues establishing Misty as someone who isn’t simply going to disappear after meeting Ash.
The biggest introduction, however, is Team Rocket.
Jessie, James, and Meowth make their debut in this episode as the villains attacking the Pokémon Center. They are introduced as members of Team Rocket, an organization that represents a much larger threat than the individual Pokémon-related problems Ash has encountered so far.
I think Team Rocket gets a great introduction. Jessie, James, and Meowth immediately establish themselves as characters who can serve as recurring antagonists rather than disposable villains who appear once and disappear. Their attack on the Pokémon Center also gives Ash his first real encounter with Team Rocket and establishes the conflict that will continue throughout the series.
What I particularly like about this episode is how much world-building it manages to accomplish without feeling like a giant encyclopedia entry. We get Officer Jenny, Nurse Joy, the Pokémon Centers, Team Rocket, and the continuation of Ash and Misty’s relationship, all while the immediate story remains focused on Pikachu’s recovery.
Overall, I enjoyed the episode. It isn’t trying to be as emotionally significant as the premiere, but that’s perfectly fine. Its job is to take the foundation established in “I Choose You!” and start building the larger Pokémon world around it.
And with the introduction of Jessie, James, and Meowth, the series has now introduced one of the most recognizable villainous trios in anime.
