Sony Updates PlayStation 4 Worldwide Sales Total to 76.5 Million Units

Sony revealed in its annual earnings report on Feb 2 that it sold 9 million units of PlayStation 4 hardware in the third quarter of the fiscal year 2017, bringing the console’s worldwide lifetime sales total to 76.5 million units as of December 31, 2017.

Sony previously announced that the console had sold 5.9 million units worldwide in the holiday period from November 20 to December 31, and said at the time that the console had sold “more than 73.6 million” units worldwide as of December 31, 2017.

The PlayStation 4 console first launched in the U.S. and Canada in November 2013 and in Japan in February 2014. Sony shipped 7.5 million units during fiscal year 2013, 14.8 million in fiscal year 2014, 17.7 million in fiscal year 2015, 20.0 million in fiscal year 2016, and 7.5 million in the first two quarters of 2017.

Sony previously revealed that it expects to have shipped 79 million units by the end of fiscal year 2017, which ends on March 31, 2018. The forecast remains unchanged.
