One of the wet shaving forums I visit regular, Badger and Blade is having the Fifth Annual “One Blade in February” Challenge.

BLADE: Dorco 301
RAZOR: Shave Factory

Shave 2

BLADE: Dorco 301
RAZOR: Shave Factory
SOAP: VDH luxury
BRUSH: Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush
PRESHAVE:
AFTERSHAVE: macho (i picked it up at the local dollar store.)

COMMENTS: first try with this soap. The fragrance was OK, but I prefer something a bit more subtle. Didn’t get great lubrication, but I think that will improve after using the soap a little more.

Shave 3

BLADE: Dorco 301
RAZOR: Shave Factory
SOAP: Williams
BRUSH: Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush
PRESHAVE: none
AFTERSHAVE: Aqua Velva

COMMENTS: Last time I used the puck of Williams soap, I found it had very little lubrication, and from what I have read a lot of wet shavers are not fans. I wanted to give it another shot, so I decided to try applying it like it was a shaving soap stick. I soaked the puck in hot water for 30 seconds or so, then rubbed the puck on my face, followed by a wet brush to whip it into a lather. This time I felt like I got a richer lather that provided a lot more lubrication then last time. I will have to play around with the Williams more to figure out if this is a good way to get a good shave from the Williams or if it was a fluke.
I finished off the shave with a splash of Aqua Velva aftershave.

Shave 4 (2/10)

BLADE: Dorco 301
RAZOR: Shave Factory
SOAP: VDH Deluxe
BRUSH: Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush
PRESHAVE: none
AFTERSHAVE: Macho

COMMENTS: This shave was a bit of a after though. I only soaked my brush for a minute or two and I didn’t prep my face much. Like normal I face lathered and found that my soap went on dense and fairly even. It was a thinner layer then normal and felt a bit drier then usual.
This was shave #4 for this blade. The first pass was mostly with the grain. The second was across the grain on the face and against the grain on the neck (this is how I always do it). The first pass cleared away the bulk of the last few days stubble and the second made my face nice and smooth. I am starting to realize why they say not to change up the routine to much when starting out. When I stick to my routine like today I keep seeing gradually improvement, but the last few I was experimenting and the quality suffered. I think I am starting to get the techniques down but need to play around with the amount of water I am working with.

Shave 5 (2/15)

BLADE: Dorco 301
RAZOR: Shave Factory
SOAP: VDH Deluxe
BRUSH: Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush
PRESHAVE: none
AFTERSHAVE: Macho

COMMENTS: I went into this challenge assuming it would be easy. The 301 blades I have been using always give me a number of comfortable close shaves ad i only shave every few days. Unfortunately shave #5 was quite uncomfortable. I preped my face just like last time, and when i bought metal to face it was all ripping and pain.
